WELL OVER 1,000 people attended Ammanford Fire Station's sixth Open Day. Alan Smith said: “It's always a good opportunity for the public to meet their local firemen, see the everyday running of a fire station and also to raise funds for the Fire Service Benevolent Fund and local charities.

“There was an exceptionally good turn-out this despite the rather cool weather. We anticipate that we will have raised about £2,000.”

The event was opened by the town mayor and attended by Chief Fire Officer Ronnie King and chairman of Dyfed County Council, Myrddin Evans.

The successful evening barbecue organised by Leading Fireman Philip Watts was a sell –out and was followed by songs from cabaret artist Helouise, a recent winner on BBC TV's Opportunity Knocks and a disco .

Winner of the colour TV set was Nesta Davies of 7 Tycroes Road, Tycroes.
