On September 7, Sub-officer W. H. Arthur, of Ammanford, was presented with a 20-year long service medal and a medal for good conduct at the Carmarthenshire and Cardiganshire fire brigade's annual station efficiency competition.

Mr. Arthur. a former Amman Valley grammar school boy, started his career as a male nurse at Wiltshire county mental hospital.

In 1941, he joined the Royal Air Force and served in the far east for four years.



A former member of Ammanford choral society, he is at present Civil Defence Officer with the Swansea area N.C.B.

Mr. Arthur joined the National Fire Service on January 13, 1947 as a part-time fireman.

He was transferred from the National Fire Service to Carmarthenshire and Cardiganshire fire brigade upon its inception on April 1 1948.

He has served at the Ammanford station for 20 years. He was promoted to leading fireman on October 1, 1959, and gained promotion to sub-officer on May 1, 1961.


Mr Arthur, who is resigning at the end of the month, represented the brigade at the Cenotaph on November 1, 1961, a unique experience for a sub-officer.
